The Triad partnership in Galax, through the Office of the Galax Police Department, protects our
growing elderly population. With the support of the local Law Enforcement
and other community services groups, Triad works to keep older citizens of Galax
informed of their rights.
A major purpose of Triad is to develop, expand and implement effective crime prevention
and safety programs for the senior citizens of Galax.
Triad works at the local level to improve the quality of life for seniors by providing
an active exchange of information between local law enforcement and seniors.
Triad was established on a national level in 1988 when three national organizations agreed that
the elderly could better be protected by cooperative efforts. The relationship was cemented when the
organizations - the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), International Association
of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and the National Sheriffs' Association (NSA) - signed a cooperative
agreement.
TRIAD was established in August of 2004 when an agreement was signed between the City of Galax
and then Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore.
The Galax S.A.L.T. Council (Seniors And Law Enforcement
Working Together) is the goverening body that oversees all senior activities for
the Galax TRIAD group.
The S.A.L.T. Council is comprised of senior citizens, law enforcement officers,
community service organizations such as Social Services, Rooftop of Virginia senior services,
and District Three Senior Services, and other citizens who have a vested interest in our growing
senior population. We meet the 1st Tuesday of each month at 11:00 am at the Galax Recreation
Department. These meetings are open to all citizens.
The Galax S.A.L.T. Council assesses the needs of seniors and explores ways to
deliver information to seniors that addresses quality of life issues for seniors and information that can
prevent seniors from becoming a victim of crime. The number 1 concern for seniors is the "fear of
crime". The S.A.L.T. Council attempts to provide seniors with the tools that addresses
these fear issues.
The S.A.L.T. Council sponsors a training at least once a quarter, with some training being
offered every two months. These trainings are offered free to the public. We also collaborate with other
senior groups, such as local churches and the Galax Recreation Department senior group, in sponsoring
events and trainings.
Please contact Sgt. Chris Brown at the Galax Police Department at 276-236-8101 or

trainings or for more information on the becoming a member of the S.A.L.T. Council
