The City of Galax is located in Southwest Virginia, 8 miles north of the
North Carolina line. The city rests on the border of Grayson and Carroll counties.
The Galax Police Department is authorized by the Code of Virginia and the
Charter of the City of Galax. The Galax Police Department consists of
thirty-eight employees in five divisions. Members are assigned to uniform
enforcement, criminal investigations, Community Oriented Policing, services
and administration.
The mission of the Galax Police Department is to provide safety and security
related service to the citizens of the City of Galax. We realize that the
true measure of success is the satisfaction and positive perception of the
citizens who reside and work in Galax, Virginia. The Police Department
constantly strives to protect and preserve the rights afforded to the
citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia by the Constitution and the Code of Virginia.
The Galax Police Department was accredited by the Virginia Department of Criminal
Justice Services in April 2001. State Accreditation requires that a department
meets or exceeds two hundred fifteen standards which address police services
and personnel policies. There are currently 33 accredited police agencies in Virginia.
